Michael Jackson Memorial to be held at LA's Staple Center
MICHAEL JACKSON fans shouldn't visit Neverland Ranch tomorrow expecting to say farewell to the late King of Pop
Despite earlier reports that a viewing would be held Friday on the property outside Santa Barbara, California, a public memorial service for Michael will not take place at Neverland. Jackson family spokesman KEN SUNSHINE, who made the announcement yesterday, said plans for a public memorial elsewhere will be disclosed in the near future. A private memorial service for family and friends may still be held at the ranch, sometime after the funeral.
ABC News is reporting that a public memorial will be held Tuesday at the Staples Center, the home of the NBA's Los Angeles Lakers. It had been rumored elsewhere that another possible location for a public memorial is the Los Angeles Coliseum, though a City Hall official warned the Associated Press that talks were, quote, "completely preliminary." The latter venue could potentially seat over 100 thousand people.
The Jackson clan met with authorities on Tuesday to discuss funeral plans, but the California Highway Patrol says the "details are still pending." The CHP would need to be called upon if Michael's body were to be transported from Los Angeles to Neverland Ranch.
Plans have fallen through for Michael to be buried at Neverland Ranch. California law prohibits un-cremated remains from being interred outside a cemetery. A co-owner of the property was unable to secure an exemption.
E! News reports that Michael may be buried at Forest Lawn Memorial Parks and Mortuaries in Hollywood Hills, where the body is reportedly located. However, E! News says an official decision regarding burial plans has not yet been made.
Entertainment Tonight reported yesterday that BARRY MANILOW will escort Michael's friend ELIZABETH TAYLOR to Jackson's funeral this weekend, after making an appearance at a Fourth of July concert in Washington, D.C. Taylor is one of countless celebrities who have paid tribute to Michael in the wake of his death last Thursday. Earlier this week, STEVIE WONDER called Michael a "special" person during an appearance at the Montreal Jazz Festival.
In New York City last night, the Apollo Theater held another tribute to Michael, hosting impersonators of the singer during Amateur Night.
If you're wondering about the fate of Michael's rented home in L.A., where he collapsed, TMZ.com reports fashion designer and Michael's friend CHRISTIAN AUDIGIER will relocate his headquarters there later this year.
