"Heartbreaker" (single peaked at #23/1980) | The single that launched Pat Benatar's career was actually a cover version of a song originally cut by an obscure English singer by the name of Jenny Darren. Pat recalled, "I loved this song from the first second I heard it. It was exactly this kind of sentiment I was looking for, for this first record. I changed all the verse lyrics and part of the chorus... the original contained too many English colloquialisms that I didn't think an American audience would understand. When Neil put on that blazing guitar solo I knew it was a hit!" Said Neil, "After we put our first band together --- we only had a couple weeks to get ready to go into the studio. No warm-up gigs! Not much rehearsal either. To this day, I don't know how we made this record so fast. I knew once we got the right take of "Heartbreaker," we were definitely on to something." |
