"Hit Me With Your Best Shot" (#9/1980)
Pat Benatar's very first top-ten single was "Hit Me With Your Best Shot," a song written by Toronto-native Eddie Schwartz. "Let me just say this up front... anything derogatory that I have to say about this song is in no way a slam against the writer Eddie Schwartz, or your taste as a listener. Eddie wrote a great little song and I know you love it, but me, I've had enough! This song is like all those embarrassing little 'baby pictures' your mother insists on dragging out all the time. They were cute at one point, but now, they are just annoying reminders of times past. This song is also a casualty of success. It was over-played on the radio and over-performed by us!" Pat continued, "When we received the demo, we loved the 'tongue-in-cheek' aspect of the lyrics. They were hilariously macho and we thought this would be a great way to poke fun at our emerging image. Unfortunately, no one else got the joke. --- Anyway, I will always be grateful for the way the song propelled our careers and the Crimes Of Passion record to the next level." Neil added, "If you get the joke, you'll like it even more."
