How to Identify Pet-Killing Cane Toads

As it gets warmer and wetter outside, they will begin to descend - and they can kill your dogs, who may be tempted to smell/lick them. Cane toads.

Even if YOU touch them, your skin will be irritated. If you rub your eyes afterward, they will burn pretty fiercely. But your dog could be dead in 15 minutes after licking one.

So which are Cane Toads and which are harmless frogs? I’ve never been able to tell the difference so I am constantly on watch - with a flashlight on night walks - never letting my fur dude near any kind of frog. He’s not allowed in the yard at night either.

You can see them during the day but much more likely at night.
