In a news release, the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department said it was called to a school for reports of an intoxicated teacher on campus just after 10:15 a.m. on Monday.

Brian Nichols, 44, a teacher, was arrested after deputies who arrived found that he was under the influence of alcohol while teaching children. In an email, deputies said that the school was not being identified, but described the students as middle-school aged.

In an emailed statement, a spokesperson for the Coachella Valley Unified School District said that they could not comment on personnel matters when asked if Nichols was still employed by the district. The spokesperson added, “Coachella Valley USD would like to remind our students and staff that their safety is a priority, and we will continue to take the necessary measures to ensure that happens.”

Nichols was taken to jail on a $35,000 bond, and is due back in court on Dec. 7, KTLA reported.

Police have asked anyone with further information to contact them.
